Naples – The investigation into the tragic death of little Domenico Caliendo has received a crucial new development. The Naples Public Prosecutor's Office has ordered the acquisition of new multimedia materials—videos and photographs—that could shed light on what truly happened inside the operating room at Monaldi Hospital.

The child lost his life on February 21, exactly two months after a failed heart transplant, performed on December 23, 2025. Now, the magistrates coordinating the investigation into complicit manslaughter (Prosecutor Giuseppe Tittaferrante and Deputy Prosecutor Antonio Ricci) want to see clearly through the electronic eyes of those who, on that day, were physically present at the operation.

The smartphone's eye in the operating room

At the center of the new investigative offensive is the cell phone of GCL, a social-health worker (OSS) working at Monaldi Hospital, who witnessed the operation. According to prosecutors, the device may contain crucial information for reconstructing the chain of events that led to the child's death.

Given the urgency of preserving the data, the Prosecutor's Office has served a notice for a unique technical assessment, comparable to an evidentiary hearing. The assignment will be formally assigned on April 16th at 9:30 a.m. to the prosecution's technical consultants, Engineer Michele Colimoro and Salvatore Carusio, who will have the delicate task of extracting a forensic copy of the smartphone. The notice has already been served on the seven suspects, their respective defense attorneys, and the Caliendo family, represented by their lawyer.

The accusations of forgery and the defense of the doctors

But the operating room practices aren't the only hot topic in the investigation. At the same time, the investigation into alleged tampering with medical records is developing. The investigated doctors, Oppido and Bergonzoni, are also facing charges of forgery, for allegedly having subsequently altered little Domenico's medical records.

A few days ago, preliminary hearings were held before the Preliminary Investigations Judge (GIP) to assess the request for a restraining order filed by investigators against the two professionals. At this hearing, the Oppido defense team filed a substantial brief.

Heard the company's top management

The defense document further accelerated the investigation, prompting the prosecutor in charge of the case to summon and interview additional people with knowledge of the facts. The hearings, which focused specifically on the crime of document forgery, involved prominent figures, including Dr. Anna Iervolino, general director of the Colli Hospital, and several perfusionists, the specialists on the cardiac surgery team responsible for the vital management of the heart-lung machine during the operation.

The search for the truth about Domenico's death now involves cross-referencing the testimonies, the seized documents and the pixels of a video that could reveal what the medical records may have attempted to hide.
