The race for the presidency of the Italian Football Federation is heating up, and a strong initial lineup is taking shape. A clear consensus emerged from the Lega Serie A assembly, held in Milan: eighteen out of twenty clubs are ready to support Giovanni Malagò's candidacy.
A broad, almost unanimous consensus, leaving only Lazio and Verona isolated, the only clubs opposed to the proposal. The name of the former CONI president, with his extensive managerial experience and established international profile, thus stands as a candidate to become the point of reference for Italian football ahead of the June 22nd elections.
The path, however, is still being built. The deadline for the official submission of candidacies is May 13th, and in the meantime, other players are also making moves. Among them is Giancarlo Abete, current president of the National Amateur League, who makes no secret of his ambitions.
"I will ask the board of directors of the National Amateur League to grant me the same responsibilities that President Malagò received from the Serie A clubs," he declared, clearly indicating his desire to build a shared candidacy.
Abete is aiming for a discussion of content rather than names: "By sharing the candidacy, I will present myself first within the context of discussing the content and then assess where the names will fall."
The emerging scenario is one of an undecided game, where Serie A's momentum alone may not be enough to determine the final outcome. The Italian football system, divided between professionalism and amateurism, will be called upon to find a balance that reconciles diverse interests and visions.
