Naples – It took days of patience, frame-by-frame analysis, and the courage to delve into the rubbery silence of the eastern suburbs. But today, the circle has closed. Francesco Pio Autiero, 23, and an accomplice who will soon turn 18, KV, have been arrested for the voluntary manslaughter of Fabio Ascione.

What incriminated them was the "black box" in a bar in Ponticelli: a video that not only captured the killer, but also captured the last, unaware moments of a twenty-year-old boy's life.

The cursed intersection at the counter

It all begins with an everyday, almost banal gesture. Fabio enters a bar to buy a pack of cigarettes and a coffee. I exchange greetings with his cousin, who is also there. As Fabio pays at the register, the cameras focus on Autiero, standing nearby. The killer smiles. The two pass each other at the door. Not a word, not a glance too often. Fabio leaves and heads home, walking toward death.

But a few minutes later, that area becomes the setting for a Wild West-style sequence. Two groups face each other: on one side, a dark SUV carrying the "Volla boys," linked to the Veneruso Rea clan; on the other, Autiero, riding a Beverly 300 driven by the seventeen-year-old. A close-range firefight ensued, from which Autiero escaped by returning fire.

Fifty centimeters away

Destiny unfolds a few meters from the front door of the Ascione house. Autiero is still there, surrounded by a crowd of young men. He's miming the action, recounting, with his gun still hot in his hand, how he repelled the rivals' attack. Fabio finds himself in the wrong place at the most tragic moment. He approaches the group, perhaps to get past, perhaps drawn by the excitement.

According to the investigators' forensic findings, the gun barrel was no more than 40-50 centimeters from the twenty-year-old's chest when the shot went off. It wasn't a planned execution, but an act of criminal bravado that ended in bloodshed. Fabio didn't run; he didn't have time. He looked his killer in the eye and uttered a phrase that testified to his disbelief: "Hey, you hit me." Then darkness.

The wall of silence and the turning point

The rest is a chronicle of agony and deafening silence. Fabio passed away at 6:00 a.m. in the hospital, while a veil of silence fell over the neighborhood. Witnesses were present who "didn't see," residents who "didn't hear." The Carabinieri and the Anti-Mafia Department had to battle against a hostile environment to piece together the puzzle.

In the end, it was the images and the investigators' determination that gave a name to whoever pulled the trigger. For Fabio, killed for the story of an ambush he had no involvement in, all that remains is the memory of that unlit cigarette.

Images alone aren't enough to erase the pain, but they're essential to understanding. However, the city remains silent and people aren't speaking. There's a heavy silence, and many questions remain unanswered. Let's hope justice takes its course without rushing.

The story seems clear but many points remain unclear: the time, the movements, the distance and above all the wall of silence that blocks the community. It seems that fear rules and the investigators are having to work hard to piece everything together.

I read the article and it all seems very sad and confusing, it took time to understand, and the images speak but people don't want to say, witnesses who say I didn't see, then something else emerges, the truth comes slowly but life, that, doesn't add up.
