Naples – A night of ordinary criminal madness, an armed chase through the streets of the suburbs, and, finally, a gunshot fired by mistake. A fatal mistake that forever shattered the dreams of Fabio Ascione, just twenty years old, the nonexistent guilt of being in the wrong place at the wrong time on his way home from work.

Exactly one week after that bloody dawn on April 7th, the Carabinieri have closed the circle. Two suspects have been arrested for the murder of the young man from Ponticelli. The first is a prominent figure in the local criminal organization: Francesco Pio Autiero, 23, nephew of a prominent member of the De Micco clan. Feeling hunted, the young man voluntarily turned himself in to the Carabinieri in Naples-Poggioreale, escorted by his lawyer, Leopoldo Perone.

His alleged accomplice, a minor, was tracked down and arrested by the police. The Naples District Anti-Mafia Directorate (Prosecutor Sergio Raimondi and Deputy Prosecutor Sergio Amato) issued arrest warrants for both men, charging them with very serious charges: voluntary homicide, possession and possession of a firearm, all aggravated by mafia-related motives. Investigators believed there was a real risk of their escape.

The dynamics: a bullet at point-blank range

Behind the death of Fabio, a clean-cut young man completely unrelated to the clan's agenda, lies not a targeted execution, but the chilling epilogue of a fibrillation between rival gangs. Investigators, delving into a climate of profound silence, have managed to reconstruct the minutes leading up to the tragedy, supported by video surveillance footage.

Shortly before Fabio collapsed on the pavement near his home, the two suspects had been involved in an armed raid. Riding a Beverly scooter—the minor was the driver, Autiero the armed passenger—they had engaged in a shootout near a bar against a group of young men linked to the rival Veneruso-Rea clan of Volla, who were traveling in a Volkswagen Tiguan SUV.

The hitmen's composure, however, turned tragic when Fabio crossed their path. According to the investigation, the bullet that struck the twenty-year-old in the chest was fired at extremely close range, between 40 and 50 centimeters. It was Autiero himself who pulled the trigger, likely accidentally while still holding the weapon after the raid. A single, lethal shot.

The last goodbye

Today is a day of tears for an entire community tired of paying the price for wars that aren't theirs. Fabio Ascione's funeral will be held this morning in the Church of San Pietro e Paolo in Ponticelli. Officiating at the funeral and seeking words of comfort for a grief-stricken family will be the Archbishop of Naples, Cardinal Domenico Battaglia, who has always been on the front lines against the violence of the Camorra, which continues to steal the future of this city's children.

Sorry for Fabio's family, I don't know what to say, the city always pays the price for these wars, too many weapons in the streets, kids who shoot without thinking, one mistake makes such a mistake and life ends, no immediate justice, we hope that something will change but I don't know
