This morning, a meeting convened by Prefect Michele di Bari was held at the Government Palace in Naples to address issues related to the Roma camp on Via Carrafiello, in the Giugliano in Campania area.
The meeting was attended by the Land of Fires Commissioner, representatives of the Municipality of Giugliano, the Metropolitan City, and law enforcement. The goal of the meeting was to review ongoing actions and plan further interventions for the management of the area from a social, health, and environmental perspective.
Social projects and healthcare
During the meeting, the Municipality outlined the social initiatives already underway and presented new projects. These include the possible activation of a mobile health center within the area, using a fully equipped camper van that would allow monitoring the sanitation and hygiene conditions of the camp's residents.
The service, to be implemented following consultation with the relevant healthcare facilities, would allow for medical visits and, when necessary, the administration of medications.
Particular attention has been paid to the protection of minors. Some of them are already involved in schooling, tutoring, and afternoon educational activities. The municipal administration is also evaluating specific initiatives for the summer period, with the aim of ensuring educational continuity during school closures.
Waste and fire prevention
On the environmental front, the Municipality has announced the start of periodic removal of unsorted waste in the area. At the request of the Prefecture, a detailed analysis of the quantities collected will also be undertaken in the coming weeks.
The site had already been the subject of an extraordinary cleanup operation coordinated by the Sole Commissioner for Reclamation in the Land of Fires, General Giuseppe Vadalà, which had enabled the removal of approximately 400 tons of material.
The shared goal is to avoid further waste accumulation and prevent the risk of fires, a particularly critical phenomenon with the arrival of the summer season.
Strengthened controls on the territory
On the security front, the police force's commitment to strengthening territorial control activities has been confirmed. The Army will also be deployed to support operations as part of Operation "Safe Roads," with the aim of intensifying monitoring of the area and preventing risky situations.
Among the commitments undertaken is also that of reducing the time between the reporting of waste accumulations and their removal.
Road and video surveillance interventions
The Metropolitan City is planning, within its scope of jurisdiction, road network interventions in collaboration with the Special Commissioner for Infrastructure and Social Redevelopment in Highly Vulnerable Areas, led by Fabio Ciciliano.
At the same time, local police initiatives are planned to combat waste fires by strengthening local police operations. These measures will be financed with resources from the Single Justice Fund, earmarked for the installation of surveillance cameras and the activation of operational support units.
For the summer of 2026, the Municipality of Giugliano has been awarded a total funding of 40 euros by the Ministry of the Interior.
The path to overcoming the camp
Finally, the municipal administration's ongoing efforts to progressively eliminate the Via Carrafiello camp remain in place. The project, being carried out in collaboration with the Associazione 21 Luglio, aims to identify structural and sustainable housing solutions.
The initiative's developments will be the subject of a new institutional meeting already called for next week.
The panel coordinated by the Prefecture will continue to meet periodically to monitor the situation and promote shared solutions between institutions and private social organizations, with the aim of strengthening legality, inclusion, and protection of the local area.

The meeting in Naples seems useful but many doubts remain: minors are involved but it is not specified how the summer school courses will work, the sanitary camper is only a hypothesis; the waste removal is irregular, and the prefecture and the administration do not seem to coordinate well, the police and the army should be better coordinated, the funds (40 thousand) are just a little, the path to overcoming the camp seems slow and unclear, we will see soon.
