Exactly one year has passed since the sudden kidnapping of Giuseppe Maddaluno, the fifteen-year-old son of a businessman from San Giorgio a Cremano. An incident that, on April 8, 2025, brought to light one of the most serious and feared crimes in the criminal world: kidnapping.

According to investigators' reconstruction, that morning the boy was picked up in the Vesuvian town on the outskirts of eastern Naples. A swift, meticulously planned operation, which apparently involved a small, organized commando unit.

The young man was loaded into a car and taken to a house on the eastern outskirts of Naples, where he was kept under surveillance for several hours.

The commando's plan

Investigations by the District Anti-Mafia Directorate revealed that the group operated with rudimentary means and a minimal budget. Investigators reconstructed how the kidnappers spent just fifty euros on rope, duct tape, and other tools used to restrain the victim.

A detail that, according to the Prosecutor's Office, demonstrates the group's determination and the simplicity of the means used to carry out the kidnapping.

The transfer and liberation in Licola

After the kidnapping, the fifteen-year-old was reportedly moved several times until finally being taken to the Licola area, in the Phlegraean Fields. There, the incident apparently ended: the boy was released after approximately eight hours of captivity.

A relatively brief kidnapping, but one which, due to its nature and violence, has been defined by investigators as an extremely serious episode.

The accusations of the Anti-Mafia Prosecutor's Office

During his closing speech, prosecutor Henry John Woodcock reconstructed the entire prosecution case in court, asking for heavy sentences for the three defendants.

The Prosecutor's Office has requested an 18-year prison sentence for Renato Franco, believed to be one of the organizers of the kidnapping and identified as having ties to the alleged Formicola clan. For his cousin Giovanni Franco, accused of participating in the planning and operational phase of the kidnapping, the request was 16 years.

Twelve years, however, was the sentence requested for Antonio Amaral Pacheco de Oliveira, who is said to have contributed to clarifying several aspects of the affair.

"An act of extreme cruelty"

In his address to the panel of judges, Woodcock called the kidnapping "an act of extreme cruelty," stressing the need for a severe judicial response.

According to the prosecution, the kidnapping of young Maddaluno represents a particularly alarming episode due to its manner and context, especially because it affected a minor and occurred in broad daylight.

With the prosecutor's closing statement, the proceedings now enter the final phase of the trial. In the next stages of the proceedings, the defense will respond to the charges, before the court's decision.

This long-awaited verdict will establish the responsibilities of the three defendants and bring closure to one of the most disturbing judicial cases to emerge from the Vesuvian area in recent years.

I read the article and it seems serious, but there are many things that shouldn't be said clearly; the story seems precise, but important details about how those responsible were caught or not are missing. The family appears shocked, but the justice system will have to do its job to get answers.
