Ischia – The green heart of Ischia has been ravaged by flames once again. The final figure for vegetation on Mount Epomeo is nearly 10 hectares (92.202 square meters, to be precise).
The perimeter of the affected area, which extends for over two linear kilometers, paints a picture of a fragile ecosystem severely tested by a fire that, during the night, also dangerously touched several homes.
Technological intervention and monitoring
Thanks to a massive mobilization of regional Civil Protection workers and volunteers, the flames were contained during the night, despite the impossibility of airlifting.
"Already this morning, the drone with the thermal imaging camera no longer detected any fires, only residual smoke," declared the regional councilor for Civil Protection, Fiorella Zabatta.
The use of technology made it possible to avoid the use of helicopters in the early hours of the day, confirming that the situation is currently under control, although a constant presence remains active to prevent reactivations.
Campania, a heritage under siege
The figures emerging from Legambiente's Forest Forum, held today at the Foce Volturno Nature Reserve, paint a dramatic picture for the region. Over the past twenty years (2003-2023), Campania has recorded over 58 fires, destroying 115.383 hectares.
This figure is in stark contrast to the region's richness: forests cover 35,9% of the region's surface area (nearly 500 hectares), a vital resource that the Regional Forest Fire Prevention Plan seeks to protect through excellent training at the Ernesto Calcara School.
A call for prevention: "The fire season has already begun."
The most worrying aspect concerns the timing. While the "maximum danger" period officially begins on June 15th, this year the first significant fires were recorded as early as Easter Sunday.
"More prevention work is needed," warned Zabatta, appealing to citizens and farmers to be responsible. The councilor reiterated the absolute ban on:
Burning of agricultural residues, stubble and weeds;
Lighting open fires or using fireworks;
Throwing cigarette butts or parking your car on unpaved roads in wooded areas.
The fight against fire, therefore, is no longer just a seasonal issue, but a civic commitment that must last year-round to protect Campania's landscape identity.

It seems like a very worrying situation, but no one is proceeding with respect; the volunteers have worked hard, but the institutions aren't doing enough. We need to do more in prevention and awareness, ongoing education, and stricter controls, not just words. I hope people understand and stop throwing cigarette butts and lighting fires.
