Naples – During an inspection documented with a video on his social media channels, the mayor of Naples Gaetano Manfredi visited the new metro station Capodichino, calling it "practically finished." The announcement marks a concrete step in strengthening the city's sustainable mobility.
"We will open it soon, at least the upper section, to ensure immediate use," Manfredi explained, "with the goal of having trains running by 2027." The mayor emphasized the project's strategic importance: "Directly connecting the airport to the subway means offering an efficient and useful service for both Neapolitans and tourists, another step towards positioning Naples among the great European capitals."
An architectural and technological jewel
Manfredi then described in detail the intervention, entirely managed by the City of Naples and built by MN spa through Webuild Group, based on the studio's project Rogers Stirk Harbor + Partners by Richard Rogers. The station presents itself as a unique structure: circular, approximately 50 meters deep, with fully exposed technology that becomes a distinctive architectural feature.
Inside, four spiral staircases and eight panoramic elevators will take passengers from the lower levels to the urban level. This is more than just a stop on Line 1: it will be a true intermodal hub, connecting Capodichino International Airport to the city center, the port, and the central train station in about nine minutes.
"This is not just a station," the mayor concluded, "it is an international gateway, an example of sustainable mobility, and a symbol of Naples's accelerating future with infrastructure worthy of major European cities."The work is part of the broader plan to extend the metro Line 1 towards the north, intended to significantly improve the connectivity of the metropolitan area and support the tourist and economic development of the city.
