Carabinieri from the Salerno Anti-Adulteration and Health Unit (NAS) conducted extensive checks ahead of the Easter holidays. The inspections, aimed at protecting public health and ensuring the food safety of typical seasonal products, covered not only the province of Salerno but also the areas of Avellino and Benevento.

The overall inspections revealed approximately 12 quintals of food seized, with an estimated value of over 120 euros, while the administrative fines imposed amounted to approximately 8 euros.

Pastry shops suspended due to serious hygiene deficiencies

In the Salerno area, the inspections focused specifically on the Agro Nocerino Sarnese, the Sele Plain, and the capital city. Here, the police found several irregularities in some confectionery businesses.

In collaboration with the competent local health authority (ASL), two pastry shops were ordered to suspend operations due to serious hygiene and sanitation deficiencies. During inspections, organic material encrustations were found on the equipment and widespread dirt was present throughout the premises.

During the investigations, approximately 175 kilograms of untraceable confectionery products were seized. In two other businesses, minor hygiene violations were reported, with orders to restore sanitary conditions.

Irregularities in elderly care facilities

The NAS inspections also included several social care facilities for the elderly. One of these facilities found that the maximum number of authorized guests had been exceeded, while others revealed structural issues.

Reported problems include mold, deteriorated plaster, non-compliant emergency bells, and toilets lacking adequate facilities for people with disabilities.

Seizures also in the province of Avellino

Similar checks were also carried out in the Avellino area, where the Carabinieri seized a total of seven quintals of typical confectionery products.

Several critical issues were detected in three pastry shops, including mold on the ceilings, damaged glass, and clutter in the storage rooms, situations that led to the imposition of corrective measures.

In a nursing home for the elderly, a shortage of social and health care staff was discovered relative to the number of residents, in addition to structural problems such as the lack of mosquito nets and malfunctioning emergency bells.

Benevento, 300 kilos of untraceable products seized

In the province of Benevento, checks focused on the capital and the Telesina Valley area. At a pastry shop, the NAS seized approximately 300 kilograms of untraceable sweets and baked goods.

Minor irregularities were found in two other businesses, with warnings issued for disorderly conduct on the premises and improper management of packaging materials.

The operations are part of a nationwide inspection plan implemented by the NAS (National Anti-Corruption and Prevention Agency) ahead of the holidays, aimed at ensuring the safety of food intended for consumers.

Editorials (1)

Useful information, but it may seem a bit repetitive; the checks appear spotty; in some laboratories, encrustations and widespread dirt were observed. There's a lack of staff and maintenance in the retirement homes, and the doorbells don't work. We hope the NAS intervenes and that the management fixes the problems as soon as possible.
