Naples – A day the Vomero neighborhood won't soon forget. Piazza Medaglie d'Oro was transformed yesterday into a theater of urban warfare following the attack on the Credit Agricole branch, where a group of robbers had been holding the entire block hostage for hours, barricading themselves inside with employees and customers.

Tensions soared when it became clear that the criminals, surprised by the arrival of the patrols, would not give in easily. Inside, the civilian plight unfolded: ordinary people entering the bank for a simple transaction found themselves targeted by the bandits' guns, trapped in a claustrophobic atmosphere of anguish.

The siege of the special forces and the mediation

The bank's exterior was literally sealed off by a massive Carabinieri presence. Dozens of patrol cars, first responders, and special forces surrounded the building, pointing their weapons at every possible escape route. Carabinieri negotiators, specialists trained to manage hostage situations, also arrived quickly on the scene. They spent hours trying to establish contact with the commando unit to convince them to surrender and ensure the prisoners' safety.

While the crowds outside are kept at a safe distance and traffic in the hilly neighborhood is in a frenzy, behind the bank's glass walls, a psychological chess game is being played between the state and criminals. Dog units and bomb squads have combed every corner of the perimeter, fearing that the robbers might use underground tunnels or explosive devices to break in.

News like this suggests a volatile security situation, but I don't want to rush to judgment. Sometimes law enforcement acts deliberately slowly, other times they do a reasonably good job. I read the newspaper and stop to think that perhaps more prevention, more controls, and also more clarity in the news were needed, because people remain confused and frightened.

I saw the traffic jam and the fear down in the neighborhood, but the authorities were doing their job, even if they seemed overly strict. Hopefully, the hostages will get out safely, but communication wasn't perfect, and many people were left disoriented, not knowing what to do or where to go.

I don't know exactly what to say, I was nearby but I didn't understand everything, it was quite chaotic: the square was full of people running, and the carabinieri seemed useless in calming things down. The negotiators were talking, but there was no clear sign of a surrender; it all seemed very distressing and claustrophobic for those locked inside the bank.
