Naples – The Teatro San Carlo, a key asset of Italy's cultural heritage, is at the center of a judicial monitoring operation aimed at shedding light on the compliance and administrative regularity of its past management. On Wednesday, April 15, officers from the Guardia di Finanza's Economic and Financial Police Unit conducted document checks and acquired electronic devices as part of an investigation involving twelve individuals, including former superintendent Stephane Lissner, former Director General Emmanuela Spedaliere, and the Academy's director, Ilias Tzempetonidis.

The investigators (Prosecutor Antonella Serio and Deputy Prosecutor Giuseppina Loreto) are focused on protecting the integrity of the organization, investigating potential crimes ranging from fraud to embezzlement and forgery, involving the management of financial flows and the consistency of internal processes.

Brand Integrity: Involving the Biggest Opera Companies

A sensitive aspect of the investigation concerns the relationship with some of the most important brand ambassadors in international opera. According to the prosecution, approximately €212 was paid to high-profile figures—including tenor Jonas Kaufmann, director Klaus Guth, soprano Asmik Gregorian, and director Krzysztof Warlikowski—for masterclasses and teaching activities that, according to initial investigations, were not actually performed. This mechanism would have posed a critical issue in the governance of compensation, allowing spending caps set by artistic management regulations to be exceeded, potentially jeopardizing the institution's financial credibility.

Process Audits: Appointments and Conflicts of Interest

The investigation also extends to the Foundation's organizational structure and business ethics. The Guardia di Finanza (Fiamme Gialle) highlighted anomalies dating back to April 2020, when, under Lissner's leadership, management roles (General Management and Human Resources) were created that were not provided for in the original bylaws. These positions, entrusted to Emmanuela Spedaliere, among others, allegedly generated costs inconsistent with the required efficiency parameters.

Further investigations concern transparency in internal collaborations: the focus is on the position of Michele Sorrentino Mangini (son of the former CEO), employed as a director for Officine San Carlo, and a €350 transfer of funds between mother and son, a factor that requires rigorous verification to rule out reputational risk or asset misappropriation.

Risk monitoring and accounting control

Alongside the criminal investigation, the Court of Auditors (Deputy Prosecutor Davide Vitale) continues its monitoring activity. The authorities' goal is to ensure the accountability of management and protect the value of the Theater by verifying the proper use of the concessions of the Officine San Carlo in Vigliena, suspected of having been used for events open to the public in violation of regulatory standards.

Today's operation is necessary to restore the highest levels of brand safety and ensure that the management of one of the world's most prestigious theaters always meets the highest standards of professional ethics and administrative correctness.

I partially agree, but there are too many grey areas; the management of expenses is not transparent, and the amount per masterclass seems strange. Perhaps more precise public documents and independent controls are needed to protect the theatre and its workers.

I think it's right to carry out checks on San Carlo, but the matter seems a bit confusing. Too many documents are missing, and appointments are poorly explained. Transparency and clear procedures are required, but without prejudging matters; the facts must be ascertained calmly.

I hope the investigations will shed light on the Teatro San Carlo and that responsibilities will be determined impartially and quickly. Cultural heritage must be protected, but true transparency is needed; there are confusing procedures, strange appointments, and dubious payments. We hope the procedure will restore citizens' trust.
