This summer promises to be another challenging one for Naples metro users, especially in the northern part of the city. Between July and August, three stations on Line 1 will be closed for modernization and track replacement work. Although official confirmation is yet to be made, the decision is widely believed by municipal officials and would mirror what happened last year.

The affected stops are expected to be Frullone, Chiaiano, and Piscinola once again, resulting in service suspension along the entire stretch from Colli Aminei to the terminus. The suspension will take effect after school closures and will allow for work deemed necessary by the administration to improve the infrastructure.

Meanwhile, work is also underway on other sections of the line, particularly between Municipio and Garibaldi, where the early closure at 9:00 PM from Monday to Thursday has long been causing inconvenience to commuters. This measure is expected to be discontinued starting in June.

The consequences for passengers will be significant. It's estimated that approximately 18 passengers will be affected in July and approximately 7.500 in August, numbers that clearly demonstrate the impact on city mobility. And it doesn't end there, because further critical issues will also affect Line 2, with three closures scheduled for August for infrastructure upgrades.

Of particular concern, however, is the planned shutdown between October and January 2027 on the stretch between Pozzuoli and Campi Flegrei, necessary for the construction of the new Porta del Parco station on Via Nuova Agnano. This four-month suspension, which will also affect the Christmas period, risks disrupting thousands of commuters from the Phlegraean Fields.

Criticism was quick to come. "This is a shortsighted decision that affects an area already in difficulty, because it interferes with a strategic line without offering credible alternatives," said city councilor Riccardo Volpe, emphasizing the existing critical issues involving Cumana, Circumflegrea, and road transport.

Ferrovie dello Stato is evaluating the possibility of operating replacement buses between Pozzuoli and Campi Flegrei, a feasible solution for that extra-urban stretch. However, the issue of internal connections within the city remains, where regulations limit the use of replacement bus services to avoid further congestion.

In this scenario, between necessary construction sites and a lack of alternatives, the risk is that once again commuters will pay the highest price, already tested by months of disruptions and interruptions along the city's main railway and subway lines.

I think it's fair that work gets done, but we commuters are left with no real options. Too many stations are closed, replacement buses don't arrive, or are few, and traffic is getting worse. The Naples subway is still suffering, and no real alternative has been seen.
