Naples – A breakthrough has been reached in the investigation into the shooting that occurred on April 1st in Piazza Carolina, in the heart of Naples, just meters from the Prefecture. Overnight, the State Police arrested 19-year-old Remato Elia, who is considered seriously suspected of shooting and wounding a minor.
The measure, issued by the Naples District Anti-Mafia Office, charges the young man with the crimes of personal injury and illegal possession of a weapon in a public place, aggravated by mafia methods.
According to investigators, he was the perpetrator of the ambush that caused panic in the square in the historic center, one of the busiest areas of the city.
The ambush in front of the Prefecture
The investigators' reconstruction starts from what happened on the afternoon of April 1st.
The alleged attacker reportedly arrived in Piazza Carolina on a moped, driven by an accomplice who remains unknown at this time. The young man, with his face covered and armed with a gun, reportedly approached the victim—a minor who was talking to some friends—and suddenly attacked him.
First he hit him on the head with the butt of the gun, then he opened fire, firing several shots that hit the boy in both legs.
A swift and violent action, carried out in front of those present and in a particularly sensitive area of the city, right next to the Prefecture building.
“One look too many”
According to initial investigations, the attack was triggered by a trivial argument, likely sparked by a glance too often.
The victim, surprised by the gunman's action, would have had no chance to defend himself.
The boy was rescued and taken to the hospital, where doctors managed to save him despite the injuries he sustained to his legs.
The decisive cameras
The investigation, coordinated by the District Anti-Mafia Directorate and conducted by investigators from the Flying Squad, led to the identification of the alleged perpetrator within a few days.
Analysis of the video surveillance systems in the area was crucial. The cameras captured various stages of the attack and the movements of the moped used in the attack, allowing investigators to reconstruct the events and gather serious evidence of guilt against the 19-year-old.
The precedent: shootings in the same square also last year
The April shooting also puts the spotlight back on Piazza Carolina, already a site of gun violence. Last year, another shooting occurred in the same area, a sign of the tensions and settling of scores that periodically surface even in the heart of the city.
The young man's arrest represents a first milestone in the investigation, while investigators are still working to identify the accomplice driving the scooter and clarify the context in which the attack took place.

This fact leaves me perplexed, I don't understand how someone could get to the point of shooting just for a glance in Piazza Carolina. The city needs security and tighter controls, but also opportunities for young people who are lost. The cameras have helped, but the problem is deeper. I hope that the investigators also find the accomplice and that the victim recovers soon.
