Naples – Moments of pure terror erupted on the evening of Thursday, April 9, aboard an ANM bus in Naples. What was supposed to be a normal trip for a German tourist and her minor son turned into a violent attack when a 37-year-old man from Chad attempted to steal money and personal items from the woman's bag.
Violence on board and arrest
As soon as the victim noticed the attempted theft, the criminal reacted with unprecedented aggression, causing panic among the passengers. The driver, keeping his cool, managed to stop the bus in Piazza Dante and immediately alerted the Local Police officers of the Avvocata Operational Unit.
The intervention of the White Helmets, however, did not quell the fury of the 37-year-old, who put up strenuous resistance, even violently attacking public officials in an attempt to escape arrest.
The criminal profile and the sentence
Investigations conducted after the arrest revealed a criminal profile already known to law enforcement. The man, despite his legal residence in Italy, had a long history of property and personal crimes. He already had a residence ban in the municipality of Avellino and an urban ban (Daspo Urbano) order issued by the Rome Police Chief.
After a summary trial, the 37-year-old was sentenced to one year and eight months in prison for attempted theft, assault, resisting arrest, and assault on a public official. However, the judge suspended the sentence, replacing it with a requirement to report to the judicial police three times a week.
