Orta di Arella – A veritable illegal breeding operation hidden within private homes. This is what officers from the Caserta Provincial Police discovered in Orta di Atella, where a wildlife protection operation led to the seizure of over 200 birds held in illegal conditions.
The intervention was launched as part of the efforts to combat environmental crimes promoted by Provincial President Anacleto Colombiano.
The raid and the macabre discovery
The inspection, coordinated by Commander Biagio Chiariello and supported by LIPU Campania game wardens led by Giuseppe Salzano, targeted the home of a local woman. Once inside, law enforcement officers encountered a situation of serious disrepair: in addition to the numerous birds crammed into cages, they found six bird carcasses in an advanced state of decomposition. The discovery necessitated the immediate intervention of the Local Health Authority (ASL) to assess the site's health and hygiene concerns.
Protected species and complaints
Among the seized live specimens, a significant number of goldfinches (Carduelis carduelis), a strictly protected species under current legislation, stood out. The woman, who had no criminal record, was unable to provide any documentation justifying her ownership of the animals.
She was reported to the Public Prosecutor's Office at the Court of Naples North: the alleged crimes range from animal abuse to the illegal possession of protected wildlife.
Recovery and safeguarding
While the cages were seized, the surviving birds were immediately transferred to a Wildlife Recovery Center. There, they will undergo rigorous health checks before being reintroduced into their natural habitat, where possible.
The operation represents another blow to poaching in the Caserta area, confirming the hard line adopted by the Provincial Police to protect biodiversity in the area.

It seems to me to be a very serious situation, but also complex. The operation was carried out, but it's unclear why the woman was alone and no one helped her. The birds were in tight spaces, with six carcasses and strong odors. More attention from the authorities and neighbors was needed, but above all, missing documentation and checks were needed first.
