He had just pulled off a scam against an elderly couple, stealing jewelry and valuables worth approximately €40. But his escape attempt was short-lived: a 33-year-old man was arrested by finance police from the Palermo Provincial Command following a check in the port area of the Sicilian capital.

The operation occurred as part of routine surveillance activities conducted by members of the Guardia di Finanza's First Metropolitan Operations Unit. The officers stopped an Italian citizen who had just disembarked from Naples in a rental car. His statements—he claimed to be in the city for vacation despite having no luggage or reservations—and his apparently nervous and uncooperative behavior prompted the officers to investigate further.

The man was then followed at a distance to determine the real reasons for his presence in Palermo. After temporarily disappearing, the suspect reappeared about half an hour later with a bag in his possession. At that point, the financial police decided to stop him for a search: inside the bag, they found jewelry, watches, trinkets, and other gold items with an estimated value of approximately €40.

The investigations launched immediately led to the identification of an elderly couple, who then identified both the stolen goods and the arrested man, clarifying the dynamics of the scam.

According to the reconstruction, the incident began with a phone call received by the husband from a person identifying himself as a Carabinieri officer. The man reported that the victim's identity card had been cloned and used to purchase a car implicated in several crimes. He urged the husband to report immediately to the police station to clarify his position and asked them to keep the line open.

Shortly afterward, as the elderly man was heading towards the barracks, his wife was reportedly contacted by another person who, also introducing himself as a member of the force, told her that she had been reported and asked her to collect all the gold objects in the house for a supposed check.

A few minutes later, the arrested 33-year-old man reportedly showed up at the door, identifying himself as an expert appraising the valuables. Once inside, he quickly grabbed the items and fled, managing to break free from the woman's grasp.

Unaware that he was already under observation, the man was stopped shortly afterward by the finance police, who recovered all the stolen goods and arrested him. The 33-year-old was then transferred to the Pagliarelli prison in Palermo, where he will be held by the judicial authorities.

It seems strange to me, that's what they said, the story seems confusing: the old man didn't understand the phone call and the woman opened the door for a supposed expert, then the man stole the jewelry and ran away. The finance police caught him, but the procedures seemed unclear, and let's hope everything gets sorted out.
