During the night between Thursday, April 23rd and Friday, April 24th, a fire engulfed the Pathological Anatomy department at the National Cancer Institute IRCCS Fondazione "Pascale" in Naples. According to initial reports from the Carabinieri who responded to the scene, the blaze was caused by a short circuit in some electrical panels located in the basement, the cause of which was believed to be accidental.
Smoke spread through the ventilation system, reaching the upper floors and requiring the intervention of the Fire Brigade to secure the building.
The issue of the findings and the delay in communication
What has raised serious questions is not only the extent of the damage, but also the management of the communication: the news was officially made public by the Institute only on Wednesday, April 29, seven days after the incident. General Director Maurizio Di Mauro spoke of "about ten histological slides" having been destroyed, assuring that the affected patients will be contacted to assess the most appropriate measures.
However, the reports received by the Green and Left Alliance MP Francesco Emilio Borrelli describe a much more worrying scenario: a citizen reports the loss of over 400 biological samples, hypothesizing potentially serious consequences for oncology diagnoses and treatment pathways, due to insufficient controls on the facilities.
"It is extremely serious that an event of this magnitude, which occurred at a center of excellence like the Pascale, was only reported today, after a week of silence," Borrelli stated. "Transparency towards the public, and especially towards cancer patients, must be the absolute priority. If the numbers reported by citizens were confirmed, hundreds of people could see their chances of receiving a timely diagnosis and starting specific chemotherapy protocols jeopardized."
The MP announced the immediate submission of a parliamentary question on three points: the actual number of artifacts destroyed, the state of maintenance of the department's electrical systems, and the reasons for the delay in public communication. "We will not accept gray areas affecting the patients," he concluded.
