Naples – The latest update on the geophysical situation in the Phlegraean Fields calls for the usual caution in interpreting preliminary data. According to the weekly bulletin released today by the Vesuvius Observatory (INGV), a possible increase in ground uplift velocity has been detected over the past 48 hours.

Data analysis and scientific caution

Experts from the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology have clarified that the values recorded between yesterday and today are to be considered preliminary. Definitive confirmation of the trend will require reprocessing the information using more precise orbital products and data analysis in the coming days.

The aim is to establish whether this is an isolated variation or a change in the average monthly velocity, which, since the beginning of February, had remained stable at around 10 millimetres per month.

The scenery at Rione Terra

Continuous monitoring provides a precise picture of the evolution of the area: Overall uplift: At the GNSS station in Rione Terra, the ancient center of Pozzuoli, the total uplift measured since January 2025 has reached approximately 27 centimeters.

Seismic Activity: The report for the week of April 13th to 19th highlights a relatively stable seismic situation. Fourteen events with magnitudes greater than zero were recorded, with a peak of 1.8 recorded late in the evening of April 13th.

Surveillance continues unabated. The scientific community is now awaiting further data to confirm any significant changes, maintaining constant dialogue with the Civil Protection authorities to ensure maximum transparency and safety on the ground.

I'm reading the article and it seems a bit confusing. The data seems preliminary but it's not clear. 27cm seems a lot, but maybe it's just a local point. Monitoring should continue, but researchers should better explain the methods, times and margins of error, so we can be more at ease.
