The Prefect of Naples, Michele di Bari, called a new meeting of the Rescue Coordination Center this morning to provide an update on the results of the inspection conducted by the Fire Department at the Petronio School on Via San Gennaro Agnano, in the municipality of Pozzuoli. The school was inspected following the detection of abnormal carbon dioxide levels and increased temperatures on the ground floor, which led to its temporary closure.

Participants and institutional coordination

The meeting was attended by Regional Councillor for Civil Protection Fiorella Zabatta, Mayors Luigi Manzoni of Pozzuoli and Josi Della Ragione of Bacoli, as well as representatives of the INGV – Vesuvius Observatory, the Metropolitan City, the Municipality of Naples, SORU, the Fire Brigade, the Regional School Office, and the police force.

Results of the inspection and measures taken

The inspection confirmed the persistence of the values recorded in the previous days, reasonably attributable to gas accumulation resulting from poor ventilation, aggravated by the temporary inactivity of the school building. For this reason, the school remains under lockdown, with constant monitoring by the Fire Department over the coming days. Continuity of instruction has been ensured by activating double shifts at the school's branch, as ordered by the Headmaster.

Checks and surveillance underway

The INGV – Vesuvius Observatory continues to monitor the phenomenon's evolution closely and constantly. The Mayor of Pozzuoli has announced intensified inspections of municipal buildings in the affected areas.
The Rescue Coordination Center will meet again after the technical inspections that the Fire Brigade will conduct on the school building.

It seems the situation is under control, but the firefighters said it will remain closed. Parents understand the double shifts, but nothing is perfect. Further technical checks are needed, and the authorities should carry out more checks and provide clearer explanations soon.
