An advanced, extensive, and particularly complex laryngeal tumor was successfully treated thanks to endoscopic surgery performed at Ruggi Hospital in Salerno. The patient, an elderly man from Pompeii, was recently cured following an operation that completely removed the lesion without resorting to traditional invasive techniques.
The carcinoma affected the glottic region, involving both vocal cords, the anterior commissure, and the posterior paraglottic spaces, presenting a highly challenging clinical picture. Despite this, the team led by Professor Francesco Salzano was able to perform conservative surgery, preserving the larynx and ensuring a significantly higher quality of life than more aggressive approaches.
"The procedure was performed using direct suspension microendoscopy, using a CO2 laser," Salzano explains. "This is a highly specialized technique that allowed us to perform a type VI quadrectomy, one of the most challenging surgical procedures."
The procedure allowed for the complete removal of the tumor, as confirmed by histological examination, despite the difficulties associated with the extent of the disease. This technique is in keeping with the tradition of the Neapolitan school, already codified by Professor Giovanni Motta, and today only used in highly specialized centers.
The main advantages of endoscopic surgery include reduced patient impact, rapid post-operative recovery, and the absence of a tracheotomy, with discharge generally occurring within 24 hours of surgery.
The patient himself expressed great satisfaction, publicly thanking the medical team: "I didn't think it was possible to undergo such a delicate operation and go home so quickly. They saved my life with great professionalism and humanity."
