The revocation of journalist Domenico "Mimmo" Rubio's security detail has become a political issue. The issue was raised in the Senate by Democratic Party Senator Walter Verini, who called for institutional intervention following the decision announced by the Naples Prefecture.
Rubio, a court reporter originally from Arzano, had been under protection since 2020 following threats and intimidation related to his professional activity. The area where he works has also been plagued by episodes of violence linked to organized crime in recent years.
In his speech, Verini emphasized that the decision comes at a particularly sensitive time. "Rubio has initiated trials against Camorra members held responsible for the intimidation of him, which are currently underway," the parliamentarian explained.
According to Verini, this is an unprecedented circumstance: "This is the first time that the escort has been revoked while legal proceedings are underway regarding the threats received, on the grounds that the dangerous situation no longer exists."
Several organizations committed to protecting press freedom have already expressed concern about the matter, including the National Federation of the Italian Press of Campania, the Article 21 association, and the Ossigeno per l'informazione observatory.
According to reports in the Chamber, the journalist has expressed his intention to no longer cooperate with the judiciary and the District Anti-Mafia Directorate, claiming he doesn't feel adequately protected. For this reason, the Democratic senator has asked Parliament to take a stand on the matter: "I ask this Chamber to make its voice heard."
