Naples – The heart of the Spanish Quarter is like the set of an action movie, but with real and dramatic consequences. What was supposed to be a normal Saturday filled with tourists turned into a frightening afternoon when a rider, riding a large-engine scooter, forced a municipal police checkpoint in Vico Lungo Gelso, sparking a dangerous chase through the crowded alleyways.

The escape and the investment

During a desperate rush to escape the officers of the GIT Motorcycle Unit, the man aimed his vehicle toward the crowd, speeding between restaurant tables and pedestrians. During the maneuver, the rider struck an elderly woman and narrowly missed several families with children. The woman was immediately rescued: although she suffered significant injuries, doctors ruled out any life-threatening injuries.

The perpetrator, who initially managed to disappear, later turned himself in under pressure from the investigation. The investigation revealed an alarming criminal profile: the man is a former prisoner with a criminal record for Camorra association and murder, recently released from prison.

Borrelli's reaction

The incident has violently reignited the debate over security in Naples' historic center. Green-Left MP Francesco Emilio Borrelli harshly condemned the incident, calling it a symbol of an "anarchic drift" that is now unsustainable.

"This isn't just an accident, but the result of rampant deregulation where anyone feels entitled to trample on the rules and the lives of others," the MP declared. "It's unacceptable that someone with a history of clan ties can dart unchecked among pedestrians, endangering public safety to avoid detection."

The appeal to the State: "Zero tolerance"

According to Borrelli, the situation in the Spanish Quarters requires an immediate change of pace from the authorities. Although the neighborhood has become an international attraction, road safety management remains, he says, lacking.

"This arrogance is suffocating good citizens and honest merchants," the MP insisted, demanding that territorial control be made a top priority again. "Video surveillance is not enough without a massive police presence. We demand zero tolerance: whoever ran over that woman must pay dearly. Naples cannot remain hostage to criminals and barbarians."

It seems like a very serious and confusing situation. I'm not saying who's to blame, but it's dangerous. The delivery driver forced his way into the parking lot and hit the elderly woman. The officers chased him, but then they lost track. The Spanish Quarters are full of tourists and shopkeepers. More control and serious measures are needed.
