A day of celebration, remembrance, and recognition for the 174th anniversary of the founding of the Italian State Police. The national ceremony, titled "The Police Looking to the Future," was held in Rome's Piazza del Popolo, featuring institutional events and initiatives open to the public.
The celebrations opened this morning at the Higher Police School, with the laying of a wreath at the War Memorial by Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, in the presence of Police Chief Vittorio Pisani. It was a deeply meaningful moment, dedicated to those who lost their lives in the line of duty.
The heart of the event was the official ceremony, during which the President of the Republic awarded the Gold Medal of Civil Merit to the Flag of the State Police, recognizing the dedication of the men and women involved in escort and protection services, both in Italy and abroad. Officers and officials who distinguished themselves for courage and dedication were also honored, with posthumous awards and promotions for extraordinary merit.
In the afternoon, tradition also took center stage with the Guard of Honor at the Quirinale, while Piazza del Popolo was transformed into a meeting place for citizens and law enforcement thanks to the "Space of Legality." This area was designed to showcase the daily work of the police force, featuring operational demonstrations, stands, and interactive activities.
"Choosing to celebrate our anniversary in a symbolic square of the city represents our spirit of closeness to the people," emphasized Domenico Cerbone. "We wanted to create a space to share the values that guide our work and a memorial trail dedicated to the police escorts who died in the line of duty."
Remembrance played a central role, with the creation of a path dedicated to the 21 security officers killed between 1976 and 1992. Among the symbols on display were the "Quarto Savona 15," Judge Falcone's escort car, and, for the first time, the Alfa Romeo Alfetta in which Aldo Moro's escort traveled.
The celebrations will continue until April 13th with cultural events, shows, demonstrations, and activities especially for young people. These include initiatives on digital safety, theatrical performances on social issues, and sports activities with Fiamme Oro athletes.
