Naples – Exactly twenty-two years after that brutal Camorra murder, the District Anti-Mafia Directorate's investigation has come to a close. This morning, Carabinieri officers from the Caserta Provincial Command's Investigative Unit executed a pre-trial detention order against three individuals believed to be leading members of the Bidognetti faction of the Casalesi clan. They are charged with the inescapable crime of murdering and setting fire to Matteo Tesorello in April 2004.

The Death Trap

According to the investigators' reconstruction—endorsed by the investigating judge of the Naples Court who signed the precautionary measure—Tesorello was the victim of a carefully planned execution. Lured by deception to a sports facility located between the Caserta municipalities of Frignano and Villa di Briano, the victim had no chance: the hitmen awaited her and fatally shot her using a firearm, which had been illegally brought to a public place specifically for the purpose of carrying out the ambush.

The body set on fire

To obliterate evidence and simultaneously send a macabre signal of criminal supremacy over the area, the killers didn't stop at murder. Tesorello's body was hidden inside a car, which was subsequently set on fire. The charred carcass of the vehicle, containing the victim's remains, was found abandoned only days after the ruthless execution.

The accusations and the mafia aggravating circumstance

Today's operation, although still in the preliminary investigation phase (with the resulting presumption of innocence for the suspects), paints a very serious picture. The three arrested men are alleged to have acted in concert, with distinct roles but within the same criminal plan. Their situation is further aggravated by their premeditation and the use of typically mafia methods: the murder was allegedly commissioned and carried out with the specific purpose of facilitating and strengthening the Casalesi clan's power in the Caserta area.

I read the news, but I'm quite neutral: 22 years after that terrible event, one hopes that justice will take its course, but the details remain unclear to me, the reconstruction seems complex, more evidence is needed, and I ask for clarity and transparency in the investigations, for the families involved and for the community.
