Luigi Nappo was the 55-year-old truck driver, a resident of Marano, who lost his life during the night between Sunday 19th and Monday 20th April on the A1 motorway, on the Caserta stretch near the San Nicola La Strada service area.

The man was hit by a car while he was walking on the roadway, engaged in a protest by truck drivers against high fuel prices.

At the time of the accident, a convoy of heavy vehicles was stopped on the right shoulder of the highway, a few kilometers from the Caserta Sud exit. The victim was coordinating traffic between the trucks when she was struck by the vehicle. The driver of the car stopped at the scene and was reported to the Highway Police, who responded to investigate.

The protest and the suspension of the blockade

The protest was organized by the Trasportounito association for April 20-25, with the aim of raising awareness among institutions about the high fuel prices. At the same time, Unatras announced a road haulage stoppage starting at midnight on Sunday.

Following the truck driver's death, Unatras Secretary General Maurizio Longo announced the immediate lifting of the blockade. "The blockade had begun at midnight, and pickets were being set up when a car speeding near Caserta struck a small-time truck owner who was organizing the picket," Longo stated. "From dawn, we gradually began to lift the blockade because this event shocked us. He was a young man with a family."

I feel sorry for Luigi Nappo, he was a man, but the situation was confusing. The trucks were parked on the sidelines, and the guards weren't well-organized. The car appears to have been speeding, and no one coordinated properly. I hope justice is served and that the investigation sheds light on the situation.
