The Public Prosecutor's Office of Naples North has dealt a devastating blow to the highest levels of regional politics, closing the loop on the alleged irregularities that marred the May 2025 municipal elections in Giugliano in Campania. The notice of conclusion of the investigation, signed by Deputy Prosecutor Patrizia Dongiacomo, targets high-profile figures, including Lega Senator Gianluca Cantalamessa and Forza Italia MP Annarita Patriarca. Also under investigation are former regional councilor Pasquale Di Fenza, regional councilors Massimo Pelliccia and Francesco Iovino, as well as lawyers Giuseppe Maiello and Rosa Cecere, and metropolitan councilor Giuseppe Nocerino.

At the heart of the investigative file is the system for authenticating the signatures required to submit electoral lists. According to the prosecution, the suspects falsely claimed that the signatures had been affixed in their presence, when in reality—according to the magistrates' findings—the signatories never appeared before public officials. In total, investigators are alleging 113 unlawful incidents involving 206 signatures deemed forged or otherwise not properly authenticated, undermining the transparency of the democratic process that led to the election of Mayor Diego Nicola D'Alterio.

The investigation spares no political party, involving all 14 lists that participated in the election: from the six center-left parties to the seven center-right parties supporting D'Alterio and Giovanni Pianese, to the civic list of mayoral candidate Pezzella. The investigation aims to demonstrate how violating electoral rules was a widespread practice to ensure participation in the administrative round despite the lack of minimum formal requirements.

The crucial phase of the proceedings now begins. The defendants will have twenty days to submit defense statements or request a hearing before the public prosecutor to provide their version of events. Once this deadline expires, the Prosecutor's Office will have to lift its reservation and decide whether to proceed with the indictment of the parliamentarians and councilors involved or to dismiss the individual cases, in a climate of intense political tension as the fate of the Campania leadership of the governing parties is revealed.

I partially agree: transparency should be a priority, but procedures require time for thorough verification. Citizens deserve clear explanations, but here we see a huge mess of protocols and signatures that aren't properly registered.

It seems to me that the matter is very complicated and must be ascertained calmly, without political hype; however, the documents and signatures appear strange and it is not clear how they were authenticated, therefore the proceedings will be suspended.

The North Naples prosecutor's office has made a strong statement, but the reconstruction seems confusing and full of holes. The names are listed one after the other without any order, the signatures seem strange, and the elections are confusing. But this is not confirmed. We hope that justice will clarify matters and that the politicians will respond seriously.
