In Pistoia, police have stepped up their efforts to combat scams targeting seniors, intervening in two separate incidents that occurred on the same day. The first resulted in the arrest of a 19-year-old on suspicion of aggravated fraud; the second resulted in a 54-year-old being charged with attempted fraud.
According to investigators' reconstruction, the young man contacted an 88-year-old woman, presenting himself as a court representative, and claimed the urgent need to hand over money and valuables. The woman allegedly entrusted her with gold and cash worth approximately €25. Flying Squad officers stopped him as he was leaving the home, recovering the entire sum and the stolen goods, which were later returned to the victim. The 19-year-old was taken to prison, pending a validation hearing.
Two episodes in a few hours
In the afternoon, in the Fornaci area, police responded to a second attempted scam. According to their investigations, a 54-year-old man allegedly contacted a resident by phone, pretending to be seeking legal action regarding his car. The resident, suspicious of the request, contacted 112, allowing officers to locate and apprehend the man as he attempted to flee. He was subsequently charged with attempted fraud.
The Pistoia police commissioner issued mandatory expulsion orders to both suspects, banning them from returning to the municipality for three and four years, respectively. This operation is part of efforts to prevent and combat fraud, a phenomenon that continues to particularly affect those most vulnerable.

I understand the importance of checks, but that's not necessarily enough; elderly people need protection, but information and clarity are often lacking. I think the 19-year-old was stopped and then taken to prison, but the officers have already returned them. Everything seems resolved, but doubts remain about how a 54-year-old could have acted in just a few hours.
