He kept his cool, immediately realizing it was a scam, and turned the attempted deception into a trap for the criminals. The protagonist of the incident was an 80-year-old pensioner from Mercogliano, in the province of Avellino, who promptly helped arrest the gang of the so-called "fake marshal."

It all started with a phone call: on the other end, a man introduced himself as a Carabinieri marshal. In an alarmed tone, he told the elderly man that his grandson had been involved in a serious car accident and was at risk of arrest. To avoid legal trouble, according to the false officer, it would be necessary to immediately hand over a sum of money.

The alarm was raised with the Carabinieri

The elderly man, however, refused to be persuaded. Sensing a scam, he immediately contacted the Carabinieri of the Avellino Company, working with them on a strategy to capture the perpetrators.

Following the instructions he received, the man pretended to believe the scammers' version and prepared the money and valuables, as requested during the phone call, arranging a delivery appointment.

The raid and the arrests

At the appointed time for the exchange, however, the elderly man wasn't the only one waiting for the criminals. The Carabinieri intervened right during the handover, detaining two people: a couple in their fifties living in Naples, who were arrested on charges of fraud.

As part of the same operation, a 19-year-old accomplice was also reported at large, believed to be involved in the attempted scam.

The incident represents yet another attempt to defraud the elderly using the "fake policeman" method, but this time the victim's quick thinking allowed the gang to be exposed and brought to justice.

It seems like a strange but normal story to me, the 80-year-old pensioner kept calm and pretended to believe, then the police and the police made a trap... but I don't know if they caught all the accomplices, the story remains a bit confusing and it seems that there are still unanswered questions.
