Naples – Twenty-one defendants have spent a total of over two centuries in prison. This is the final outcome of the harsh sentence handed down today by the Naples preliminary hearing judge against the criminal network rooted between Somma Vesuviana and Sant'Anastasia, considered close to the Mazzarella Camorra organization.

The investigation, conducted by the Naples Anti-Mafia Prosecutor's Office, resulted in severe convictions for a range of serious crimes, from mafia-style association to drug trafficking and dealing, to illegal weapons possession and extortion.

The top figures and the penalties inflicted

The most severe sentence was handed down to Rosario De Bernardo, considered by the judiciary to be the leading figure of the group active in Somma Vesuviana. The judge sentenced him to 19 years in prison.

The other organizational figures identified by the investigation also received particularly significant sentences: 18 years and 6 months for Salvatore DiCaprio, 18 years and 4 months for Carmela Miranda, 18 years for Fabio Annunziata, and 15 years and 4 months for Clemente Correale. The other sixteen defendants involved received sentences ranging from 11 to 3 years in prison.

The dynamics of drug dealing from prison

Among the prominent figures sentenced were Raffaele Anastasio, leader of the Sant'Anastasia group, who was sentenced to nine years, and Michele Mazzarella, who received a six-year sentence. The latter's sentence was reduced thanks to the continuation of the crimes following a previous, final sentence.

According to meticulous reconstructions carried out by the Carabinieri Investigative Unit of Castello di Cisterna, Mazzarella himself played a central role in the organization, managing operations directly from prison. Wiretaps documented how he remotely coordinated the drug dealing centers in the Vesuvius area—active in the sale of cocaine, crack, kobret, hashish, and marijuana—as well as the related supply channels, making use of his associates at large.

The origin of the investigation

Today's convictions represent the final act of the investigation that culminated in the maxi-blitz of May 2025, when the police carried out dozens of arrests in the municipalities of the Vesuvian area to dismantle the organizations that, taking advantage of the brand of the Neapolitan parent group, controlled the territory in a capillary way both through drug dealing squares and by imposing extortion demands on local entrepreneurs.

The article talks about many convictions but doesn't explain everything: heavy sentences, but the reality is more complex; the Carabinieri have done their job, but people still remain without answers and trials are sometimes slow, the Mafia is reborn and prevention is lacking.
