Bologna – The investigation conducted by the Carabinieri of the San Lazzaro di Savena Mobile Radio Operations Unit, coordinated by the Bologna Public Prosecutor's Office, concluded with the arrest of a 21-year-old man. The young man, a resident of Caivano, is seriously suspected of conspiracy to commit fraud and aggravated theft against elderly citizens.
The “method” of fake control
According to the military's reconstruction, the young man's reach was developed through a well-known, yet insidious, deception technique. Contacts began with a phone call in which the victims were convinced they were involved in an unspecified legal matter.
To "resolve" the situation, the unfortunate victims were induced to display their valuables on the table at home, waiting for a representative to analyze them and exclude them from a supposed list of stolen goods linked to a jewelry store robbery. In reality, the goal was to steal the goods.
Two episodes between Bologna and San Lazzaro
The investigation focused on two incidents that occurred on March 2nd: in Bologna, a married couple (aged 81 and 75) fell into the trap, having their jewelry and valuables stolen, estimated to be worth approximately 50.000 euros.
In San Lazzaro di Savena, a 65-year-old woman sensed the danger before the theft was fully completed. Although her reaction scared the suspect away, he managed to steal approximately €3.000 worth of jewelry.
The investigation and arrest
The investigation relied on technological tools and direct testimony. In particular, images recorded by a video intercom allowed investigators to identify the suspect.
After gathering the evidence, the Preliminary Investigations Judge issued a pre-trial detention order. The 21-year-old was located in Sesto San Giovanni, in the province of Milan, where the Carabinieri of the San Lazzaro Operational Section executed the order, transferring the suspect to the relevant detention facility.

History confirms that the telephone is becoming a tool for scams, and the police are doing their job, but more prevention is needed. Perhaps harsher fines and blocking anonymous numbers would help, but it's unfair to target only the victims without preventive measures.
It's important that investigations continue and stolen property is recovered, but often there's insufficient evidence, and suspects flee. A local information campaign and increased surveillance would be helpful, and people should be more cautious about opening their doors.
This is truly disturbing. I read the article and it seems serious to me. The fake check technique is clever, but the elderly remain exposed. The authorities should carry out more checks, inform the public better, and perhaps install more cameras, but it won't be enough without education.
