The State Police dismantled a criminal organization specializing in robberies, whose members posed as law enforcement officers to deceive victims. At the request of the Naples Prosecutor's Office, the Court of Naples issued a precautionary measure against seven people, aged between 34 and 70.
Four of them were ordered held in custody, while the remaining three were ordered to remain in their homes. They are charged with aggravated robbery, whether committed or attempted.
The modus operandi
The group operated according to a well-rehearsed plan. To carry out their raids, the criminals wore jackets with the words "Guardia di Finanza" written on them and traveled in vehicles identical to those used by the authorities. The cars, later found to be stolen and bearing cloned license plates, were equipped with flashing lights to avoid arousing suspicion as they approached their targets.
The start of the investigation
The investigation, coordinated by the VII Section of the Naples Public Prosecutor's Office and conducted by the Flying Squad, began following a robbery that occurred on February 15, 2023, at a social cooperative in the capital. Subsequent technical investigations led to the attribution of nine criminal incidents to the group, committed between April and July 2023 in various locations in the provinces of Naples and Caserta. The total value of the illicit proceeds is close to €400.
Two former soldiers involved
A particularly significant element that emerged from the investigation concerns the composition of the group. Among those held under precautionary detention are two former Carabinieri non-commissioned officers. Both had previously been dismissed from the service following final convictions for other property crimes.
The Casalnuovo hideout
Law enforcement finally identified the organization's logistical base: a warehouse located in the municipality of Casalnuovo di Napoli. Inside the facility, investigators found and seized weapons, bulletproof vests, masks, and wigs. The hideout also contained a vast assortment of counterfeit material, including badges, uniforms, caps, and paddles attributable to the Guardia di Finanza and the Carabinieri.
