Rome – A bolt from the blue has rocked the Italian football season finale. The Italian Football Federation's Prosecutor's Office has officially referred Juve Stabia, a newly promoted or currently playing in Serie B, and five historic Serie C clubs: Triestina, Ternana, Crotone, Trapani, and Siracusa, to the National Federal Tribunal (Disciplinary Section). The serious charges concern a series of administrative violations that could fundamentally reshape the league standings.

The investigation and the protests

The measure stems from technical reports by the Independent Commission for the Verification of the Economic and Financial Balance of Sports Clubs. The oversight body highlighted anomalies in the financial statements and in the bureaucratic procedures required to maintain the national license. Not only the clubs as legal entities were scrutinized, but also their legal representatives, who are now held personally accountable for the financial management of their associations.

The geography of referrals

The investigation is vast and affects almost the entire peninsula:

Serie B: The Juve Stabia It is the only representative of the cadet series.

Serie C, Group A: Involved Triestina.

Serie C, Group B: Referral for the Ternana.

Serie C, Group C: The heart of the southern group was hit with Crotone, Trapani and Syracuse.

What are the clubs risking?

According to the current provisions of the Sports Justice Code, referrals for administrative violations open up worrying scenarios. In the best-case scenario, clubs could get away with hefty fines. However, case law regarding "failures to comply" often refers to penalty points to be served in the current or next season.

At such a delicate moment in the season, with the on-pitch decisions still pending or being finalized (between the playoffs and playouts), the shadow of the courts threatens to undermine the ambitions of some of the most exciting clubs, fueling the debate over the economic sustainability of top-level football. The decision now passes to the judges of the Federal Court, who will have to assess the extent of the violations and the potential intent of the managers involved.

It seems like a serious matter to me, but it's not entirely clear how they carried out the checks or who made mistakes in the calculations. The managers should be held accountable, but the companies are also in a bad situation with regards to the numbers. I hope that the judges will see the documents and not hastily decide.
