New and delicate details are emerging from the court in San Isidro, Argentina, where the trial is underway to ascertain medical responsibility in the 2020 death of Diego Armando Maradona.

For the first time, a member of his medical team has spoken openly about the former champion's psychological frailties, offering a much more complex clinical picture than was previously known to the public.

Testimony in the courtroom

Psychologist Carlos Diaz, an addiction expert and member of the group of seven healthcare professionals currently under investigation, testified before the judges, revealing a previously unpublished diagnosis. According to the specialist, the medical team wasn't just dealing with the champion's alcohol and psychiatric drug addiction. The treatment plan also aimed to address bipolar disorder and narcissistic personality disorder.

This is the first time ever that a doctor has publicly and officially mentioned such a diagnosis for Maradona. The investigation, which also involves psychiatrists, doctors, and nurses, aims to clarify whether the team acted with due professional diligence or whether there was fatal negligence in the care of the "Pibe de Oro."

The fragilities of the sample

During his hearing, Diaz attempted to explain to the judges the mechanisms that tormented the former footballer. The specialist highlighted how his addictions were closely linked to the enormous burden of his sporting successes and a strong emotional vulnerability. Faced with feelings of frustration, the psychologist emphasized, Maradona lacked the appropriate tools to cope, ultimately seeking refuge in substance abuse.

Despite this difficult situation, the testimony also portrayed a man trying to regain control of his life. Diaz assured Maradona that he had a genuine desire to detox, explaining that he had helped him achieve and maintain a state of sobriety during the last month before his tragic death.
