The historic former municipal bakery in Vico Vasto a Casanova, for years a symbol of abandonment in the heart of Porta Capuana, is preparing for a makeover. The City of Naples has officially launched the project to renovate the building, which will be transformed into a "Food Community Hub": a public space where food becomes a tool for health, multicultural integration, and social rebirth.

The initiative, promoted by the Department of Urban Planning, led by Laura Lieto, and developed by Lama Impresa Sociale, aims to combine architectural restoration with an ambitious civic mission. "We're not just reopening an old bakery," explained Councilor Lieto, "we're building a place of care. The Ex Forno will be a bridge between Campania's excellent local producers and the residents, with a community restaurant that will serve as a refuge for those with disabilities."

The project has a strong scientific basis: the Hub will work in synergy with the UNESCO Chair for Nutrition and the Mediterranean Diet at Federico II University. The goal is to combat youth obesity—a real emergency for the city—and offer healthy and sustainable eating patterns to those with dysfunctional relationships with food or suffering from nutrition-related diseases. In a strategic and stratified neighborhood like Vasto, the Hub aims to be a permanent laboratory of active citizenship.

The schedule is already tight. Work to secure the building began between April and May 2026, along with the community engagement phase, which is crucial for co-designing services with residents and local associations. The technical feasibility study will be delivered by June, while the final design phase will begin between November and December, allowing for the actual restoration.

The Ex Forno will therefore not only be a restaurant or an educational space, but a cultural "bridge" capable of enhancing local skills and restoring dignity to a complex area, starting with the most basic need: nourishment, understood as the well-being of the body and the community spirit.

It seems like a positive idea to me, the former VicoVasto bakery at Porta Capuana has a history but many open questions remain, the community has not yet been listened to, the work has begun but the timeframe appears confusing, who will manage it afterwards?, the collaboration with UNESCO and the university is promised but we need to see the facts, transparency and continuity are needed, let's hope it works without creating further critical issues.
