Naples – A bridge solution to shorten the distance between the city center and the international airport. While waiting for Line 1 trains to physically reach Capodichino Airport in 2027, the city administration has launched a strategic intermodal plan: the immediate opening of the airport station, temporarily served by a dedicated shuttle system.

The “Plan B” for accessibility

The strategy, outlined by Mayor Gaetano Manfredi, includes the activation of a bus service operated by ANM that will shuttle between Tribunale station (soon to open, pending final approval from Ansfisa) and Capodichino station.

Although the railway line is still undergoing technical completion regarding signaling and tracks, the airport station will still open to the public. "We want the station to start operating immediately," explained the mayor, emphasizing how the shuttle will faithfully replicate the future rail route, guaranteeing estimated travel times of between 8 and 10 minutes.

Goal 2027: the America's Cup finish line

The official timetable points straight to June 2027, the date Naples will be competing in the America's Cup. By then, the goal is to have the entire railway line operational. Meanwhile, work is progressing: while the Tribunale station is now complete, the Poggioreale station will follow in 2028, although a plan is already in place to allow trains to travel to Capodichino, temporarily skipping the intermediate stop.

Investments and future: Line 10 and construction sites

In addition to the upgrade of Line 1, attention is now focused on the future Line 10, the driverless connection to the Afragola high-speed station. With the signing of the construction contract, awarded to the Spanish consortium CAF, the way is paved for a project worth a total of €3 billion.

“Our goal is to inaugurate Line 10 within the next five years,” said Manfredi, emphasizing how the infrastructure will serve the areas north of the city, historically in need of rapid and efficient connections.

The return to normal hours

Good news also arrives for the current operation of Line 1: extraordinary track maintenance on the historic section will be completed by the summer. Therefore, starting in September, full service is expected to be restored, with operating hours extended until 23:00 PM, bypassing the current early closures required for nighttime work.

Finally, the Municipality has made a request to the central government for a supplementary transport fund to align Naples with other major Italian cities such as Rome and Milan, ensuring the economic sustainability of a constantly expanding network.

It seems to me like a bridge solution that can shorten the distance between the center and the airport but there are still many doubts about the opening times and the planned connections. The shuttles and trains do not always correspond to the project. Let's hope that there are no delays for the America's Cup.
