The organizational machinery for the arrival of Pope Leo XIV, scheduled for May 8th, is entering its most delicate operational phase. To accommodate the throngs of faithful expected in the capital and, especially, in the Marian area, EAV has launched an extraordinary plan to enhance rail and bus service. In close collaboration with the Prefecture, the transport company has arranged special trains that will begin operating on the Circumvesuviana tracks in the middle of the night, with the first departures scheduled for 03:50 a.m.

The extraordinary operating schedule includes the deployment of 13 special trains, which will be supplemented by the regular service. The main focus of the upgrade will be the morning time slot, between 03:50 AM and 06:30 AM, to accommodate pilgrims to the Pompeii Sanctuary and Pompeii Excavations. Specifically, three special trains are planned from Naples to Poggiomarino (via Scafati), dedicated connections from Sorrento to Torre Annunziata, and rail shuttles between Poggiomarino and the Marian city. For the afternoon flow, EAV has guaranteed additional trains to Naples between 13:00 PM and 14:30 PM.

In addition to the tracks, the plan also significantly impacts road transport. To prevent any unexpected disruptions or breakdowns, the company has set up eight buses in "hot reserve," ready to provide immediate replacement services. The vehicles will be stationed at the Naples Galileo Ferraris depot during the morning and at the Torre Annunziata depot in the afternoon, covering the Naples-Sorrento and Naples-Poggiomarino routes, considered the lines most at risk of overcrowding.

The Pope's visit will inevitably lead to significant changes to regular traffic. In compliance with ordinances issued by the Municipalities of Naples and Pompeii, several bus lines (including the Scafati-Naples and Pompeii-Vesuvius lines) will undergo temporary route changes. Furthermore, transit through Piazza Municipio for line 922 services from Naples will be suspended. EAV recommends travelers consult official channels to monitor service status in real time on what promises to be a historic day for regional mobility.

It seems to me to be a very intense but necessary organization, especially for the crowds in Pompeii; the special trains and hot reserve buses are useful, but if the routes change frequently and there's no clear information, then queues and inconveniences arise. Let's hope the coordination works and the authorities notify everyone, but people arriving early need to be careful.
