According to the investigative reconstruction, the modus operandi was always the same: after stealing a scooter, the man would approach cars stopped at traffic lights or in traffic jams, reach through the window, grab the bag left on the passenger seat, and flee at high speed. In some cases, the victims sustained injuries while trying to hold onto the bag.

Previously convicted of similar crimes, the defendant was found guilty by preliminary hearing judge Giorgio Morando of a dozen counts. For some of the counts, the victims had not filed a complaint, while on one occasion the man had fully compensated the victim. Currently detained, he may be placed under house arrest with an electronic bracelet, as ordered by the investigating judge.

The man, together with a minor accomplice of Albanian origin, was responsible for around twenty incidents between Arenzano and Cogoleto involving so-called "vol à la portièr" (pick-up and drop-off), a phenomenon that had escalated significantly in July and August of last year, creating serious social alarm.

I think it's perfectly fair that they convicted him, but the situation isn't clear and the checks seem insufficient. People remain frightened and often don't report the crime, perhaps out of fear or mistrust. It seems the minor was involved, and the law should be more proactive. I hope the bracelet works, but we need more lights and patrols.
