Torre Annunziata Mayor Corrado Cuccurullo has resigned. The decision comes just hours after the demolition ceremony for Palazzo Fienga, a landmark building and historic stronghold of the Gionta clan.
An event of strong institutional and symbolic significance, however, marked by a harsh intervention by Torre Annunziata's public prosecutor, Nunzio Fragliasso, who spoke openly about the critical issues still present in the area.
The words of the Prosecutor's Office
During the ceremony, Fragliasso gave a scathing assessment of the city's situation and its administrative actions: he expected "a leap forward" after the administration's appointment as a special commissioner, but instead emphasized the presence of "too many shadows and too few lights," as well as alleged connections with organized crime and illegality within the administration itself.

The mayor's reply
The mayor's reaction was immediate, calling the prosecutor's remarks "serious and profoundly unjust," believing they affect not only the administration but the entire community of Torre Annunziata.
Cuccurullo rejected any generalized representation of the city, arguing that an indistinct narrative risks "demeaning" the efforts of those working for change and strengthening legality.
The administration's budget
In his speech, the outgoing mayor praised the work he had done during his term, noting that he found the municipality in difficult conditions, with structural, organizational, and personnel deficiencies.
Among the actions listed:
strengthening the municipal police
the expansion of video surveillance systems
the recovery and allocation of confiscated assets
interventions on schools and childcare services
the procurement and relaunch of public funding
support for strategic projects, including the demolition of Palazzo Fienga
Cuccurullo also emphasized institutional collaboration with the Court and the Prosecutor's Office, ensuring priority for requests from judicial offices.
“We need individual responsibility, not generalized accusations”
In the central passage of his statement, the former mayor emphasized that any critical issues or irregularities must be attributed to individual responsibility and investigated by the appropriate authorities, avoiding generalizations that implicate an entire administration or community.
The decision to leave
Hence the decision to resign: a decision that Cuccurullo links to the need to protect his institutional and personal dignity, in a context that—in his opinion—risks compromising the relationship between institutions and citizens.
“The delegitimization of the administration in the eyes of citizens is unacceptable,” he wrote, announcing his return to his professional activity.
