A highly delicate surgical procedure was successfully performed at the "Tortorella" Nursing Home in Salerno to remove a significant abdominal tumor weighing approximately 10 kilograms.
The operation, led by Professor Mario Polichetti, represents a high-profile milestone for local surgery, both due to the extent of the disease treated and the complex medical history of the patient, a 43-year-old woman.
A clinical and anesthesiological challenge
The patient's clinical picture was extremely complex. The mass, extending into the diaphragmatic area, exerted significant pressure on the abdominal organs, the retroperitoneal vascular system, and the urinary tract, also compromising respiratory function.
Making the situation even more challenging was the woman's previous neurosurgery for a cerebral meningioma. This history required extremely rigorous and personalized planning, both for anesthesia management and monitoring during the delicate post-operative period, minimizing any potential risk factors.
The power of teamwork
The successful outcome of the surgery is the result of impeccable coordination between various professionals. Professor Polichetti was joined by Professors Giuseppe Allegro and Giovanni Dalla Serra, supported by the specialized care of obstetric scrub nurse Venus Buonaiuto and anesthesiologist Dr. Antonietta Musacchio. The Post-Operative Intensive Care Unit (TIPO) team also played a key role, monitoring the patient's stability in the post-treatment phase.
"There are very few similar cases in the scientific literature," explained Professor Mario Polichetti, emphasizing the extraordinary nature of the event. "The size of the mass and the patient's previous neurological history significantly increased the risks. Every single detail had to be planned with the utmost precision, relying on excellent teamwork."

This isn't the first time the Salerno medical team has undertaken such highly specialized work. Seven years ago, Professor Polichetti made national headlines for successfully removing a serious tumor from a woman in her 37th week of pregnancy, saving both mother and child.
