The young man's organized plan

According to the prosecution, Lampitelli traveled from Naples to various areas of the capital—from Spinaceto to Conca d'Oro—carefully selecting his victims: people over eighty, often alone or in poor health. His scenario was well-tested: he would pose as a postal worker, a family acquaintance, or a nephew in need, quickly gaining the trust of the elderly to deliver money and jewelry.

The Prosecutor's Office emphasized that the man preemptively assessed his victims' vulnerabilities. In one emblematic incident, he allegedly uttered the phrase "Mom said she'd find some gold" to convince a woman to hand over jewelry, wedding rings, and family heirlooms.

Three hits in one day

Investigations have revealed that on January 9, 2023, in a single day, Lampitelli allegedly carried out three scams in the Centocelle, Ottavia, and Ostiense neighborhoods.

The investigation began with a victim's complaint and was conducted by the Carabinieri of the Porta Portese station. Through analysis of cell phone records and the man's movements, investigators gradually expanded the investigation until identifying seventeen cases.

The most serious objections

In court, prosecutor Roberta Capponi also accused the defendant of two counts of extortion: on these occasions, he allegedly threatened legal consequences to the victims' families to obtain additional money. In other cases, the prosecution highlighted the exploitation of the cognitive frailty of the elderly. Among them, an 87-year-old woman suffering from Parkinson's disease and anemia, who was persuaded to hand over everything she owned in her home: €270 in cash, ten chains, and six gold rings.

It seems to me a sad story but without too many sensations about the accused, it seems that he took advantage of frail elderly people who were often alone, however I do not know the legal details in depth and I would like to understand how the investigations were carried out. The Carabinieri worked but more prevention and controls in the areas would be needed to avoid recidivism.
