Naples – The talent of children's voices returns to resonate in the Scarlatti Hall of the "San Pietro a Majella" Conservatory. The sixth edition of Napoli InCanta, promoted by the Pietà de' Turchini Foundation with artistic direction from Salvatore Murru, kicks off on Saturday, May 9th, starting at 3:00 PM. This event confirms its educational and artistic vocation, intertwining listening, contemporary composition, and educational growth.
The day is divided into two distinct and complementary moments, united by the evocative title "Guarding the Dream".
At 3:00 PM, a roundtable discussion coordinated by Murru will bring together composers, choir directors, and scholars to discuss the pedagogical value of children's voices, writing music for children, and choir as a relationship and developmental experience. This will be an opportunity to reflect on how knowledge and action are integrated into "knowing how to be."
Following, at 4:30 pm, the concert will enliven the hall with performances by top-class ensembles from various Italian regions: the Naples Conservatory Choir, the Piccoli Cantori Barcellona PG, the Garda Trentino Choir, Il Calicanto, and Scuole in Coro – Studium Canticum. The contemporary repertoire will feature original compositions, vocal interplay, and musical narratives suspended between reality and imagination, with new compositions by Piero Caraba, Andrea Basevi Gambarana, Tullio Visioli, Enrico Miaroma, and Giampiero Castagna.
The theme of dreams runs throughout the event, not as an escape, but as an exercise in possibility. In a complex historical context, imagination proves to be an essential tool for activating languages, relationships, and awareness in the new generations. Choral practice, in particular, confirms itself as a privileged terrain for inclusion and mutual listening, capable of valorizing differences and building community.
Napoli InCanta is thus part of the Pietà de' Turchini Foundation's broader commitment to music as an educational and human experience, through the production of new works and support for young musicians.

It seems like an interesting and useful initiative for children and families, but I'm not sure it will bear immediate fruit. The teachers and young people are joining in, but perhaps there's a lack of true coordination and an educational strategy. Some compositions seem well thought out, others seem more confusing, and the use of contemporary repertoire sometimes fails to consider the local context: with a little more care, more could be achieved.
