The investigations into the death of the Carabinieri Marshal by the La Spezia Public Prosecutor's Office continue unabated. John Sparago, the 25-year-old non-commissioned officer originally from Curti who took his own life on April 18th with his service pistol inside the Provincial Command of the Carabinieri.
After lengthy hearings with the parents, who were heard in recent days by Public Prosecutor Monica Burani, their brother Raffaele Sparago, also a member of the Carabinieri, was also summoned in the last few hours.
Investigators are gathering all relevant information to reconstruct the final months of the young marshal's life, who served at the Borghetto Vara Carabinieri station. His brother, who reportedly maintained frequent and constant contact with Giovanni, may have provided details of the confidences he received and the soldier's emotional state before the tragedy. The content of the statements made to the magistrates is being kept strictly confidential.
The investigative hypothesis of instigation to suicide
The Prosecutor's Office is investigating all possible investigative leads. Among these, the possibility of incitement to suicide remains open.
According to what emerges, the family members may have provided investigators with circumstances and facts deemed worthy of further investigation. These elements, if confirmed during the investigation, could help clarify the context in which the young non-commissioned officer's extreme act took place.
At the moment there are no official developments regarding responsibility, but the investigations are continuing across the board.
Analysis on smartphones, PCs and USB sticks
A key step in the investigation concerns the examination of the electronic devices belonging to Giovanni Sparago.
Technical operations have begun on the seized materials: smartphones, SIM cards, computers, iPads, and two USB flash drives. The operations, coordinated by the Prosecutor's Office, are being entrusted to IT consultant Silvia Spallarossa.
The Sparago family, assisted by lawyers Gaetano and Raffaele Crisileo, has appointed IT expert Luca De Gregorio as their consultant, who is directly following all operations on behalf of the family.
Investigators are combing through chats, messages, calls, multimedia content, and digital documents exchanged by the marshal between July 2025 and the day of his death.
Particular attention is paid to the last days of the non-commissioned officer's life and, above all, to the contacts he had between 10 and 18 April 2026, with the aim of reconstructing the last communications made before his death.
Possible threats or harassment in the crosshairs
The aspects to be verified include any references to situations of distress, harassing conduct, threats, insults, or other elements that may have affected the young policeman's psychological state.
An analysis of the devices could therefore prove crucial to understanding the human and professional context in which the case takes place and to providing an answer to the question guiding the entire investigation: suicide or incitement to suicide?
Waiting for autopsy and ballistic tests
In the meantime, the Ris of the Carabinieri in Parma, the investigations relating to the gunpowder residues found on the marshal's hands, nostrils and ears.
In this case, too, the results remain strictly confidential. The investigations were carried out by specialized military personnel from the Scientific Investigations Group, with the participation of the family's ballistics consultant, Paride Minervini, appointed by the family's lawyers.
The final results of the autopsy performed on April 23 at the Institute of Forensic Medicine in La Spezia are also expected in the coming weeks.
It cannot be ruled out that, in light of the evidence emerging from the technical consultations and scientific investigations, the young marshal's parents may be summoned again by investigators for further investigation.
