Pignataro Maggiore – What was supposed to be a simple industrial waste recovery and disposal operation turned into yet another attempted theft of "red gold." Two workers, aged 44 and 58, employed by a company specializing in waste treatment, were reported at large by the Carabinieri on charges of attempted aggravated theft.
The incident occurred in the late afternoon inside a major production facility located along the Appia State Road, in the Pignataro Maggiore area. The two men had been tasked with collecting, on board a heavy truck, some cables. Copper now decommissioned.
However, taking advantage of the loading operations, they thought of cutting and hiding in the box also 50 kilograms of cables Copper newly produced, perfectly functioning and intended for the normal activities of the plant.
The plan was foiled by the company's meticulous internal control system. As the heavy vehicle passed the scales, supervisors immediately noticed a clear discrepancy between the estimated weight of the waste and the actual mass recorded by the scales. This suspicious anomaly prompted plant managers to immediately dial 112.
A patrol car from the Capua Carabinieri Mobile Radio Unit arrived on the scene within minutes. The officers thoroughly inspected the truck's cargo, quickly discovering the stolen goods cleverly hidden among the old materials to be disposed of.
The prompt action of the company staff and the timely arrival of the Carabinieri thus avoided financial damage: the 50 kilos of intact cables were recovered and returned to the property, while the two "unfaithful" workers were inevitably reported.
It seems like a strange and slightly confusing story to me: they were supposed to dispose of waste, but instead they also took new cables. Did the managers not check carefully, or was the scale set incorrectly? Then they called 112, and the police arrived very quickly. The two workers probably thought they could sell, but the procedure should have been clearer.
