Naples – The time to shed light on the tragic death of the little one Domenico Caliendo are getting longer. The complex machinery of the evidentiary incident, ordered by the investigating judge Mariano Sorrentino to ascertain the causes of the death of the child of only two Years has concluded a crucial phase, but the judicial truth will still require weeks of waiting. The experts appointed by the judge are preparing to request an extension of at least 15-30 days to file their final report.

The deadline, initially set for June 11, is inevitably set to be pushed back to late September or early October, partly due to the courts' summer recess. This was confirmed by Francesco Petruzzi, the Caliendo family's lawyer:

"The analysis on the two hearts has been completed, and from what I learned from our medical examiner, the investigating judge's consultants intend to request an extension. The technical timeframe is being extended to ensure maximum accuracy."

The key test in the Bari laboratory

This afternoon, Wednesday, June 10, the Institute of Forensic Medicine at the Bari Polyclinic hosted a highly sensitive scientific meeting. Experts from the Court of Naples, consultants from the Prosecutor's Office, medical examiners appointed by the victim's family, and experts from the six suspects gathered around the panel.

Two distinct bodies have come under the magnifying glass of the experts, a specific procedure strongly supported by the family's defense:

Little Domenico's heart: the child died last February 21st at the Monaldi Hospital in Naples, after agonizingly following a failed transplant.

The donor's heart: the removed organ, which arrived in Naples from Bolzano in a frozen state that remains the focus of investigators' suspicions.

The legal case: the shadows over the transplant

The story has its roots in the dramatic Christmas of 2025. Little Domenico, suffering from a serious heart condition, underwent a delicate transplant on December 23rd at the Monaldi specialist center. Something, however, went wrong. The organ didn't restart as expected, and the child's clinical condition worsened, leading to his death almost two months later, on February 21st.

The Naples Public Prosecutor's Office has opened a case of manslaughter in the healthcare sector, placing six people under investigation, including doctors from the Neapolitan medical team and personnel from the organ transport chain.

The investigative hypothesis revolves around an alleged error in cold chain management: the donor heart, coming from Bolzano, arrived in Naples "frozen," a condition that could have irreparably compromised the tissue's viability before implantation. Laboratory tests completed today in Bari are aimed at determining whether the organ's failure was caused by improper preservation during transport or by surgical and post-operative complications. These answers, at this point, will only be available this fall.
