Naples – He had just smashed the glass of the reception area to steal a monitor, but his attack lasted only a few moments. Carabinieri from the Mobile Radio Unit arrested Gianluca Ruggiero, a 46-year-old with a criminal record, on charges of aggravated theft and criminal damage.
It all started with a report received by the emergency number 112. The Carabinieri "gazelle", engaged in its usual patrolling of the city centre streets, was immediately diverted to Via Firenze, where a burglary was in progress inside an apartment building.
Upon arriving, officers caught the man attempting to force open the front door of a bed and breakfast. Unable to do so due to the resistance of the lock, Ruggiero went downstairs and, with a brutal gesture, shattered the glass of the building's reception area, stealing a monitor. Convinced he had secured his loot, he realized too late that the Carabinieri were standing right in front of him, and they promptly arrested him.
When subjected to a personal search, the 46-year-old was found in possession of lock picks and other burglary tools, which were immediately seized.
Ruggiero was placed under arrest and taken to the police station where he is now awaiting the validation hearing and the summary trial.
