Capri – An emotional atmosphere enveloped Capri on Sunday, July 12, 2026, for the funeral of Peppino di Capri, the celebrated singer who passed away recently. As the coffin emerged from the former Cathedral of Santo Stefano, in the heart of the island, a prolonged applause erupted, accompanied by the strains of "Il Sognatore," a song chosen by the artist himself as his favorite from over 500 recordings.
During the ceremony, Parish Priest Don Pasquale Irolla emphasized Peppino di Capri's ability to transform life's difficulties into music, remembering him as "a dreamer" who brought Capri to the world, making himself known and loved everywhere. The priest also recalled the song "Un grande amore e niente più" (A Great Love and Nothing More) as a symbol of the love that shaped the singer's life and career.
Capri's mayor, Paolo Falco, expressed a moving memory, calling Peppino di Capri "an example, a hope, and a dream for Italy as it recovered after the war," emphasizing his role as an ambassador for the island, capable of always returning with the same simplicity.
The ceremony was attended by numerous dignitaries, including Aurelio De Laurentiis, Diego Della Valle, Luca Cordero di Montezemolo, Eugenio Bennato con Pietra Montecorvino, the Prefect of Naples, Michele di Bari, as well as institutional representatives, residents, and tourists. In the afternoon, the chapel of rest set up in the City Council Chamber witnessed a silent tribute from all the bars in the Piazzetta, which removed their tables and chairs as a sign of mourning.
