Sala Consilina – During a routine check on the highway, the Sala Consilina Highway Police recovered gold jewelry worth more than €125, stolen in a scam from an elderly woman in Reggio Calabria.
The valuables were hidden inside a backpack in a car carrying two people, who were charged with aggravated fraud. Investigations revealed that the victim had been tricked by a fake law enforcement officer who, via a phone call, convinced the woman to open the door and hand over the jewelry to an accomplice.
In addition to the fraud charge, irregularities were discovered in the management of the vehicle, which was rented without complying with applicable regulations. The stolen goods were returned to the rightful owner, while investigations continue to clarify any other possible involvement.
I partially agree, but it seems to me that restitution alone won't solve everything. We need to further investigate and verify the links between the accomplices and the rental companies that allowed the vehicles to be driven without documents. Elderly victims remain vulnerable without adequate protection, and more controls are needed.
I think this news is important, but at the same time strange. The authorities did what they could, but the way the lady was defrauded remains incomprehensible. The phone call and the delivery of the items so easily and without any doubts is worrying. The rental without regulations seems like a general error.
