Massa Lubrense: A dive into the sea ended badly, with a young man losing consciousness after an accidental impact underwater. The accident occurred Friday afternoon in Ieranto Bay, in the Massa Lubrense area, in the province of Naples.
According to the Campania Alpine and Speleological Rescue team's reconstruction, the boy—an 18-year-old—dived into the water when he suddenly collided with another person in the sea. The impact knocked him unconscious immediately, leaving him at the mercy of the waves.
Immediate help
Fortunately, some people on the beach noticed the situation and intervened quickly, pulling the young man from the water and bringing him to shore. They then cleared his airway, but he remained unconscious for about fifteen minutes.
The alarm was raised by a nature hiking guide who happened to be on the scene. Thanks to the GeoResQ app, it was possible to precisely geolocate the accident site and quickly provide the coordinates needed to activate rescue operations.
The intervention of the air ambulance
The Cassano Irpino Alpine and Speleological Rescue operations center immediately requested the intervention of the Salerno 118 air rescue service, simultaneously activating a ground support team. The helicopter reached the target in about twenty minutes, allowing the medical team to assess, treat, and stabilize the young man.
At the same time, another team from the Alpine and Speleological Rescue Service approached the intervention area by sea, coming from Capri, thanks to the consolidated operational collaboration with the Coast Guard.
Transported to the Ospedale del Mare
Once the recovery operations were completed, the injured man was placed on a helicopter and rushed to the Ospedale del Mare in Naples, where he underwent checks and treatment. His condition is currently stable, but he remains under observation for any complications related to the trauma he suffered.
The accident has rekindled awareness of marine safety, especially in crowded areas frequented by swimmers and divers. Experts recommend caution when diving and always exercise extreme caution when diving in open water.
