West Nile virus (WNV), responsible for recent serious cases and one death in Campania, continues to circulate steadily in Italy, with its spread closely linked to the presence of mosquito vectors and environmental conditions.

To better understand these dynamics, a team of physicists from the University of Naples Federico II has developed an innovative physical-mathematical model, based on a quantum version of the Game of Life, capable of simulating the mobility of the human population and its interaction with insect vectors.

The model, developed under the guidance of Professor Andrea Maria Chiariello, integrates epidemiological and climate data to interpret possible scenarios regarding the progression of epidemic waves. Comparison with historical data from the Istituto Superiore di Sanità (National Institute of Health) has shown an accurate reconstruction of the epidemics recorded in Italy, particularly in 2025, the peak year in regions such as Lazio, Campania, and Veneto.

A central element of the model is the analysis of meteorological conditions: simulations indicate that rising summer temperatures and changes in relative humidity favor mosquito breeding, increasing the risk of infection. Although the available data do not yet allow for definitive statistical correlations, the model suggests a significant link between climate and epidemic waves.

In addition to describing infection trends, the model can test the impact of control interventions on mosquito populations by simulating scenarios with changes in mosquito density. This tool proves flexible and potentially applicable to other vector-borne diseases, such as dengue and Zika.

The group is currently working with 2026 data to predict the evolution of the current season, with the goal of providing quantitative support for prevention strategies. The experts' message is clear: despite the presence of the virus, there's no need to be alarmed, but it's crucial to limit factors that favor mosquito breeding, such as avoiding stagnant water in homes.

This innovative approach represents a step forward in the understanding and management of vector-borne infectious diseases, combining theoretical physics, epidemiology, and climate data to support informed public health decisions.

What to know

Key points about the mathematical model for West Nile virus

Here is a summary of the main aspects of the model developed by Federico II University for forecasting epidemic waves of the West Nile virus.

  • Innovative model: It uses a quantum version of the Game of Life to simulate the spread of the virus.
  • Integrated data: Combine epidemiological and climate information to analyze epidemic waves.
  • Climate impact: It indicates that high temperatures and humidity influence the proliferation of mosquitoes.
  • Applicability: It can also be used for other vector-borne diseases, such as Dengue and Zika.
  • Prevention: It emphasizes the importance of limiting water stagnation to reduce the risk of infection.
