A serious accident occurred Sunday evening on Corso Garibaldi, near the Porta Nolana Circumvesuviana station in Naples. A five-year-old boy of North African origin was struck while crossing the bus lane toward Piazza Garibaldi.
The impact threw the child more than a meter away, but fortunately, after a few minutes of apprehension, he regained consciousness and was transported to Santobono Children's Hospital with a red code. His condition is not life-threatening. He suffered a fractured collarbone and several bruises, with a prognosis of thirty days.
Law enforcement, particularly the Local Police Road Accident Unit, are investigating the incident, gathering witness statements and analyzing surveillance footage. The driver of the car stopped to provide assistance and appeared visibly shaken. The Carabinieri also responded to the scene , but the delay of the 118 ambulance, which arrived only about twenty minutes later, sparked controversy, despite attempts by those present to contact the dispatcher.
The accident has rekindled the anger of residents, who have long been denouncing the dangerous nature of Corso Garibaldi. The road is classified as "out of control" due to poor maintenance: pedestrian crossings are faded or nonexistent, speed bumps and traffic islands are missing, and tram tracks protrude from the road surface, creating constant hazards for pedestrians.
Just a few months ago, on March 22, two Ukrainian sisters lost their lives on this very stretch of road, hit by a driver with a blood alcohol level and under the influence of drugs.
Residents are demanding urgent, concrete action from the City Council to ensure the safety of a road that continues to claim lives and injuries, becoming a veritable high-risk zone.
